Maionaka (or Mayonaka, basically sounds the same) I think means midnight, but I'm not sure. Atleast his name isn't Kuro, the most overused Japanese name for a black character.
Anyway, Maio's face is REALLY cute, but I hate his purpley scutes. Shoulda been more of an ivory color. And the background I totally rushed on because I wanted to get him up. But isn't his face CUTE?! I've had a kirin with this color scheme in my mind since I was 13 or 14, but the character of that one was a reincarnated ninja by the name of Roshi.
Ha, kinda funky how the male has scales on his chest while the female has breasts. I love his chest and belly fur.

the bg has this sharper textured look that slowly fades into just colour blended together nicely as it risese to the flowers. It gives it this strong perspective look, like in a photo. It makes him stand out sharply. I really like that photographic effect. Ive been meaning to try some blurry bg/fg effects. maybe sometime now, with my newer motivation, I will. o_o
I quite like this guys build.. the overall slender nicely curved appearance. Youve got the details I like. The scales are interesting and I can understand what you mean bout wanting to scutes tove been more ivory. The olivey and nightshade work very well together. The fluff here and there is nifty.. and although its interesting that his bits are scaled as they are, they look nice. ...O.o

I think the BG is fine. Excepting the minor fact that there is no sky, it's better than anything I could do.
FYI, it is Mayonaka (Maionaka would be ma-i-o-na-ka, which is different than ma-yo-na-ka), and it does indeed mean midnight.
